HANDS-ON REVIEW: Monster Chicken Royale

PUBG STUDIOS has released unique and fascinating special modes for PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS on every April Fool’s Day. It made a very interesting mode this year as well. A special mode for this year realizes the moment of “Winner Winner Chicken Dinner!” that many players have longed for. It is called the “Monster Chicken Royale.” This editor who claims to be one of the masters of PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS has made a challenge for it. Was this editor able to have a Chicken? Read onto the following hands-on review and the behind-the-scenes stories about development from those who made this mode.

A grand hunting for the Monster Chicken

You can start the matchmaking by clicking the Monster Chicken Royale banner on the upper right corner of the game’s main screen. It’s only available for solo and 4-man squad and if you lack squad mates, others will be assigned randomly. From the image on the loading screen, you can roughly guess the size of the “Monster Chicken.” It didn’t take long for this editor to realize that it was a mistake to have no regard for the monster’s size.

“Karakin” is the only available map for the mode. A cute chicken icon welcomes the players in a starting island. Looking into its lovely eyes, this editor heard a little chat between the other players who already have experienced the mode. They had a serious conversation. While listening to their detailed strategies, this editor’s hands soaked.

Karakin feels smaller than it really is due to the enormity of the Monster Chicken.

And the match finally started. This editor found the Monster Chicken even at a distance and could feel its amazing size compared to the buildings nearby. The monster’s health bar is on the upper screen, and you should exhaust the monster or survive until the last moment to win. The results of the special mode are not recorded on your career results, so you are free to enjoy.

This editor mainly used DP-28 in the latter half of the match.

After looking on the Monster Chicken briefly, this editor started farming right away. Only DP-28 and M249, light machineguns (LMG), and M79, a grenade launcher, are spawned. A 4x scope is maximum magnification that you can use for these weapons. Level 3 Military Vests and Backpacks are easy to find, but Level 3 Helmets are not. As healing items, ammunition and weapons are spawned generously, so even 4-man squad don’t need to jump down directly into a large village. Unfortunately, this editor had to wander around for items without fully understanding the game at this moment.

Never lower your guard, even when you’re far away from the Monster Chicken. If you cause aggro, it will run towards you anytime.

As the map is very small, the Monster Chicken was easy to observe as this editor was getting closer to the middle of the map. This editor started shooting with the heart pounding. Damage applied to the head and the body seemed to be different. It didn’t feel this editor shoot that much, but the ammunition was already running out. When this editor stopped by a building nearby to get more ammo, the Monster Chicken’s footsteps were getting louder. It was hard to use sounds throughout the match due to the monster’s footsteps and shriek.

The Monster Chicken’s impressive mad eyes.

And eventually this editor faced the Monster Chicken dead ahead. Its size which is almost 50 meters was absolutely incredible! Wouldn’t the characters of classic movie “Jurassic Park” feel like this? This editor almost gave up due to its overwhelming size, but soon started shooting with squad mates.

The monster suddenly prompted something like a meteor shower. It seemed to get angry. This editor thought it would just step on the players or attack with its beak, but it even launched rockets. As this meteor shower sets fire on a wide range, you must leave the site or use healing items.

The Monster Chicken has no mercy.

Rockets raining from the sky cause an instant death like the black zone bombardment in Karakin. So, the best plan is just run. Keeping a certain distance is essential. As the Monster Chicken’s attack patterns vary in every phase and it suddenly runs around with anger, hunting the monster is quite hard.

Never forget. PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS is all about surviving.

Besides the Monster Chicken itself, there are two more things that make the special mode harder to win. First, other players you can encounter in the battleground. As mentioned above, you must down the monster or be the last survivor or squad. Therefore, you should keep other players in check.

People say human is an adaptive animal. This editor saw some phenomenal players who perfectly adapted to this environment. They used DP-28, which is hard to control with a 4x scope, as if they were shooting with a designated marksman rifle. They even shot accurately, not lying down but moving.

Second is the blue zone. It’s very fast and deadly like the one in the ranked mode. The safe zone for each phase is set according to the Monster Chicken’s location. Thus, there’s no eternal safe zone until the end and you should follow the Monster Chicken.

If you use UAZs or mountain bikes, you can be more flexible in responding to the blue zone. You can easily give damage to the Monster Chicken, as you can capture an advantageous position with your vehicle. However, you could be the target for other players at the same time.

A scene reminds of a classic movie “Jurassic park.”

You can enjoy more dynamic raid with an UAZ. But you are not able to cause direct damage to the Monster Chicken by ramming into the monster with the UAZ. So, it’s better to shoot in a distance.

It was not easy to knock down the Monster Chicken. Observing other players make the final blow, this editor realized that it already passed three hours. The special mode felt like a brand-new game for this editor, even though in fact the only something new on this mode is the Monster Chicken. In the next moment, this editor wanted to ask those who made this special mode about how they designed and developed it.

What is Monster Chicken Royale? How did you design and develop this mode?

It began with an in-house contest in PUBG STUDIOS to discover a brilliant idea for this year’s April Fool’s Day. The idea of this mode with a huge chicken took the first place and we worked on creating the mode based on the concept. For this year’s April Fool’s Day, we wanted to provide a witty PVE experience for the players. I hope them enjoy the new mode.

Could you elaborate on the raid in this Monster Chicken Royale?

Monster Chicken Royale is a battle royale with a raid. The monster causes a variety of situations in the battles. We hoped this difference in a situation make the players feel the game interesting and fascinating. Also, we made more LMGs spawned in this mode so that the players can enjoy hitting the large size monster with these machineguns.

The most impressive part about the Monster Chicken is its eyes. What inspired you to come up with such design?

We had diverse concepts at the beginning. First of all, we made the character vertically enormous rather than horizontally to make it look as huge as possible. We also made the neck long to let the character be free to attack the players with its beak. There was no reference. We just tried to make “a little bit crazy chicken.”

How did you work on the mode?

Developers from many different countries worked together to produce Monster Chicken Royale. I’m grateful to them for suggesting many unique ideas for this mode.

With an M249, how many bullets are needed to knock down the Monster Chicken?

It depends on the distance, but you would need about 5,000 bullets.

Would you give us a tip to effectively beat the Monster Chicken?

You must build proper strategies, whether to concentrate on the monster or on other squads. If the Monster Chicken’s health points shrink fast in the match, you would be better to attack the monster. But, if combats with others occur frequently, you should strike at them first. I would recommend you draw the monster’s attention in order to lead the blue zone movement, letting others suffer from the magnetic field.

Is there anything you want to say to the players who enjoy Monster Chicken Royale?

I deeply appreciate that you always love PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS and enjoy Monster Chicken Royale. Every developer in PUBG STUDIOS tries hard to serve you with the best experiences and we will continue to make the game interesting. I hope this mode make you smile at least once while playing it. Thank you!
