KRAFTON

A very personal exploration into ‘Deston’ by Splatter & Tythonic S.R.

#Expectations and opinions of Deston

#Suggestions for beginners of Deston

What is the most popular map in PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS? Erangel? Miramar? There are many different opinions out there, but maybe a new option can be added. This is because a new map Deston was released to the PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS through the 18.2 update a while ago! Deston, previously known as the code name “KIKI,” is a large map of 8km×8km with the feeling of a near-future city destroyed by natural disasters such as hazardous storms and floods. The newly emerged Deston is now being explored in detail by two reviewers, “Splatter” and “Tythonic S.R.,” who are KRAFTON employees with profound understanding and experience in this game. Let’s find out what features Deston is packed with, what are the differences from existing maps, and what information would arouse the interests of beginners.

※ This review was conducted shortly after the Battleground 19.1 patch.

※ Please be advised that this review consists of reviewer’s personal opinion and not the official stance of KRAFTON and PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS developers.

#Expectations and opinions of Deston

Hello, my name is Splatter. I’m an employee of KRAFTON and a big fan who loves PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS (laughs).

When I play PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS, I like to use items and develop strategies in my own way. Even when playing with friends, we are trying to play together in a variety of styles, reminding us that it is not just a game of gunplay. Based on my experience playing Deston so far, I would like to share my own strategies and ideas on how to use new items.

When Deston first came out, I watched a Deston cinematic trailer first while receiving game update. And I immediately noticed that there are so many interesting places on this map. I’m a huge fan of PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS, so I turned on the game right away.

While matching in the lobby, I tried to go to a bathroom. But it was matched right away. I felt that there are a lot of PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS real fans who can’t stand the new map as much as I (laughs).

When I first entered Deston, my impression was that there were a lot of strange and large buildings around. I admired it with my teammates, and I got on the plane while looking at various structures during the waiting time.

Falling into the Lodge

While I was thinking about where to go by opening the map, “Lodge” in the middle of the map caught my eye the most. It felt like “Hacienda Del Patrón” of Miramar. As I looked around, as expected, there were a lot of people there. I entered the main gate of the Lodge, but I died without finding an enemy.

It was a moment when realized the users’ skills were leveled up. After repeating this three times, I realized that I needed a high proficiency to get to the major points. To avoid the initial battle, I farmed a two-story house in a collective mansion area near the Lodge. The item farming was good there, so farming was possible in one house. I thought I would go to minor places other than major places to avoid unnecessary battles in the future.

1 kill with O12

Oh, and I have tried the new gun, O12. O12 is a world spawn automatic shotgun with a default 30 rounds drum magazine, new in patch 18.2. It provides three burst mode and full-auto mode and deals very high damage. I also tried it, and unlike other shotguns, it can fire continuously, so I felt comfortable. Also, the large number of magazines (30 rounds), which can block up to 2-3 people at a time, made it difficult for enemies to enter.

However, just as is the characteristics of the shotgun, I felt that using a O12 might not be appropriate if the blue zone required for medium-long-range battles other than street battle was present. Also, I thought that it would not be easy to obtain enough ammo because O12 uses single standard bullets like AWM and P90. But except for these points, I thought it was a good shotgun that could be loved enough by users.

Arrived at Cell tower

In the 19.1 update, one of the things I felt while playing Deston was that it’s quite difficult to get a vehicle. There were quite a few games of just running around all day. So, what came to mind was “Cell tower.” A Cell Tower is a facility that instantly lifts the players to the top, allowing them to parachute down to other spots from high altitudes. It is useful because you can move about 1km at once. I thought it would be also good to glide using a Cell tower instead of using vehicles.

However, there were two or three battles on the way close to the Cell Tower. It seems that several teams had similar thoughts. A Cell tower is mostly on high ground, and it is easy to move to other areas using parachute glides, so other teams seem to want it a lot. After preoccupying the Cell tower, I tried gliding, and it was good to be able to see where the enemy was by moving about 1km. I also thought it would be good to use the Cell tower strategically if there is a roof within a gliding distance.

In addition, there is something I felt while walking around a lot of unnamed areas. That is, even if you obtain a “Security Key,” it is not easy to use it properly. I didn’t know where to use the Security Key, so I searched several places, and I found that most of them were in “Ripton.” In other places, even in large cities, there are just two or three spots where the players can use the Security Key, and there are many cases where the Security Key has already been used. There were times when up to three key cards were collected, but there were times when they were discarded without being able to use one. It seems to be of little use except when it gets off the Ripton. It will be more useful if the Security Key spots are a little more distributed, or if there is a cover when using the Security Key.

Well then, I’ll see you on the battlegrounds.

Who is “Splatter?”

Splatter is an old fan and hardcore player of PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS who has experienced the release of all the new maps and items since the early access days when only Erangel was the only map in the PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS. In particular, he is a master who won by recording more than 10 kills alone in the in-house PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS tournament held for KRAFTON employees.

#Suggestion for beginners of Deston

Hello, battlegrounds participants! I’m “Tythonic S.R.” who is going to tell you about Deston. On the surface, “Tythonic Industries” appears to be a company dedicated to the health sciences to improve quality of life. However, in reality, they are developing and producing items necessary for the battlegrounds participants. In addition, it can be said that it is a company that selects and manages battlegrounds stadiums and actually operates PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS. On this occasion, I would like to provide information that you may not have been able to access easily.

Deston differs considerably from existing maps. First, you’ll start with one more “Utility Parachute,” which is separate from the original basic parachute. This Utility Parachute can be used in many ways as long as there is a certain height. There are many skyscrapers in Deston, so you can escape from high places to avoid attacks from other players, and even go hunting for enemies hiding below. Of course, when using a parachute, it is defenseless when opening and landing, so you should use it carefully.

Covering up in the Swamp

To the north of Deston, there is a huge “Swamp” that cannot be seen on existing maps. If you have fallen into this Swamp, there is something to beware. Unlike what its name stipulates, it is not easy to conceal. Not as many trees or as deep as we might think, so you can be easily targeted by others.

In addition, if you go to a Swamp in a normal vehicle, the vehicle may become locked in the Swamp and become unusable. “Airboat,” which is mostly found in Swamp, can be quite helpful in dealing with this problem. Airboat is an open-type flatboat that can move both on land and at sea. It can traverse shallow waters, Swamp, seas, rivers, etc. at high speed. However, it is quite tricky to control, so you must be careful not to bump into trees or rocks.

And there are relatively few buildings in this area where you can farm items. Therefore, you may not be able to have all the items you need to survive. Due to these shortcomings, I don’t really recommend falling into the Swamp. However, for beginners who want to avoid enemies, going to the Swamp might be a good option.

Using a Folded Shield

Additionally, in this 19.1 patch, the Folded Shield has been added. Folded Shield can block attacks from enemies in places where there is no cover! However, you need to think about whether you should always pick it. The reasons are as follows.

First of all, the Folded Shield is a quite heavy. It is approximately the weight of 3 smoke grenades. Therefore, there may be users who prefer to pack more familiar smoke grenades because of the limited space in their bags. And it takes some time to open the Folded Shield. Therefore, it will require a certain level of proficiency to open the shield in an urgent situation.

Rooftop of a skyscraper, near the ascender

Deston has different landscapes including a city with many skyscrapers, large plains and high and rugged mountainous terrain including the Swamp I mentioned earlier at the same time. These topographies seem to be well balanced so that some places are not overwhelmingly favorable or unfavorable. The top of a mountain or the high ground of a skyscraper is usually a favorable point. However, the top of the mountain in Deston has little cover, and the skyscraper has an ascender that can be threatened at any time. And unlike landmarks like “Pochinki” of Erangel and “Pecado” of Miramar, there is no large and good central farming area, so it induces users to fall evenly.

Deston Map View

Personally, the balance of Deston is beyond my expectations. I hope this well-balanced map will be loved by many users. I hope that many users would find a more favorable spot and feel greater enjoyment while researching items in depth.

This concludes the review of the new map Deston. Thank you
